From Humble Beginnings to Global Artistry: Our 45th Anniversary Journey

Forty-five years ago, a unique artistic spark was lit in Japan. That spark was the beginning of the DECO Clay Craft Academy, founded on the vision of Kazuko Miyai. Her innovative soft clay and pioneering techniques transformed a simple craft into an international movement of delicate, life-like artistry.

Last week, we had the immense privilege of returning to where it all began—Tokyo, Japan—to host our official 45th Anniversary Celebration!

The energy in the heart of Tokyo was palpable. It was more than an event; it was a profound gathering of our global family, bringing together instructors, students, and clay craft admirers from all corners of the world to celebrate four and a half decades of creativity, passion, and beauty.

Highlights of the Tokyo Celebration

The celebration was a breathtaking showcase of what 45 years of artistry can achieve:

  • The 'Legacy of Beauty' Exhibition: The centerpiece was an exclusive exhibition featuring work from both pioneering masters and rising stars. Seeing intricate, life-like cherry blossom branches, detailed figurative sculptures, and massive collaborative projects displayed in Tokyo was awe-inspiring. It demonstrated that DECO Clay isn't just a craft; it is a truly powerful medium for sculptural art.

  • A Gathering of Masters: We honored our founders and longtime instructors. Their dedication has built the incredible infrastructure of learning and creativity that thousands benefit from today. Hearing their stories of the early days, when the original clay formulas were still being perfected, was a highlight.

  • Global Connection & Community: The common thread among all attendees was the love for DECO. Seeing friendships that span continents reunited in Tokyo reminded us that our community is just as beautiful and enduring as the art we create.

  • Workshops & New Directions: Exclusive workshops held alongside the main celebration allowed attendees to learn new, advanced techniques, ensuring that DECO's 46th year and beyond will continue to push creative boundaries.

Bringing a Piece of the 45th Celebration Home

The main takeaway from our time in Tokyo is that this 45-year history is a testament to the love of making things by hand. The meticulous detail, the gentle touch required, and the joyful act of bringing a lifeless piece of clay to life is what unites us all.

This 45th anniversary isn't just about celebrating our past; it's about sharing the tools and inspiration with you for your future creations.
